LETTER TO READERS July 31, 2008

Dear readers,

Winter Holidays have finally come and if you haven’t been able to get some days off, I hope you’ve been able to slow down, at least.

In the north, it’s summer and our English-speaking friends are having a lot of fun in the squares, parks, streets… what about you?

Have you been making the most of your time?

clip_image002[4]

Lots have been said about time management and I can assure you that little changes in your routine may bring significant results to your life quality.

Have you tried reading a book in those ten minutes you have to wait for a bus or while you wait till food is ready? Have you tried tyding your place while you talk on the phone rather than scribbling a piece of paper?

That’s it, fellows. Simple things can make a difference. Managing your life can earn you more time to enjoy your kids or watch that film you never find time to.

Watch your time! That’s a piece of advice from Universal Studies!

21st, 1959: HAWAII BECOMES THE 50th STATE

clip_image002[5]

Long before surfing movies were made about Oahu’s north shore, Hawaii’s earliest inhabitants were Polynesian voyagers, living there for more than 1,000 years before European explorers visited. The English explorer Captain James Cook called them the Sandwich Islands in 1778 for the English Earl of Sandwich. Thankfully, that name didn’t stick. How would you like to tell your friends you’re going to Sandwich on vacation?

6th, 1945: AMERICA DROPS THE BOMB ON HIROSHIMA

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuclear attacks at the end of World War II against the Empire of Japan by the United States at the order of U.S. President Harry S. Truman on August 6 and 9, 1945.

clip_image002[7]

After six months of intense firebombing of 67 other Japanese cities, the nuclear weaponLittle Boy” was dropped on the city of Hiroshima on Monday, August 6, 1945, followed on August 9 by the detonation of the “Fat Man” nuclear bomb over Nagasaki.

The bombs killed as many as 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki by the end of 1945, roughly half on the days of the bombings.

Four months after Steve Jobs first announced it, Apple’s App Store — the showcase for third-party developers writing new software for the iPhone and iPod touch — has opened its doors, at least for some users.

The timing of the launch was apparently driven by New Zealand, where the iPhone 3G was set to go on sale at 12:01 a.m., Friday July 11. Given the time difference, that dictated an opening in the United States no later than 8:01 a.m. EDT on Thursday.

What will you find in the App Store? There are already 26 full pages of programs, with 21 applications on each, and according to Apple there’s a lot more to come.

In interviews with the New York Times and USA Today, Steve Jobs offered a few statistics:

  • More than 500 programs
  • 90% of them $9.99 or less
  • 25% of them free
  • One third of them games

In addition to games, the store is expected to offer lots of educational programs, mobile commerce and business productivity tools.

The singer-songwriter will be hoping the album repeats her early success

Frenzied media coverage has followed the whirlwind relationship of Carla Bruni and husband French President Nicolas Sarkozy at every turn.

Newspapers and television stations around the world have been captivated by the grace and elegance of the Italian-born former top model.

But little, outside of French-speaking countries, is known of the 40-year-old’s singing career despite 2003 debut album Quelqu’un m’a dit (Someone Told Me) – a minimalist folky affair – selling two million copies.

Last year’s No Promises, which set the words of English poets to original music, sold a disappointing 380,000 copies.

Largely self-penned third album Comme si de rien n’etait (As If Nothing Had Happened) – her first since becoming Sarkozy’s first lady – is released in Europe on Friday and in the UK on Monday.

Form of Present Perfect Simple

  • He has spoken.
  • He has not spoken.
  • Has he spoken?

Use of Present Perfect Simple

Present Perfect Simple is used for actions that started in the past and stopped recently or are still going on. The focus is on the result.

  • Action that is still going on

Situation that is still the same as it was in the past. We want to emphasise that the situation has not changed.

Examples:

Your advice has always been extremely helpful.
We have not yet received a remittance for the goods supplied to you.

  • Action that stopped recently

Action that has just been completed. We want to emphasise the result.

Examples:

I have typed five letters.
I have just received your mail.

  • Action in the past that has an influence on the present

Action that was completed in the past, but has an influence on a present situation. Note that you must not give a certain time for the action in the past (if you want to use a time expression, you must use Simple Past).

Examples:

I have lost Misses Wilde’s phone number.
We have agreed on the following points:

  • Action that so far has taken place never, once or several times

Action that happened / did not happen in the past. We want to emphasise how often the action has taken place so far.

Examples:

I have never been to our New York subsidiary.
Misses Newton has already phoned three times to inquire about the delivery of her goods.

clip_image002THIS MONTH’S SONG IS “MAN IN THE MIRROR” BY MICHAEL JACKSON!!! I DECIDED TO POST THIS SONG BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TALKING A LOT ABOUT CHANGES LATELY, HOWEVER SOMETIMES WE FORGET TO MAKE THE MOST IMPORTANT CHANGE….IN OURSELVES!!!

clip_image004
“Man In The Mirror”
I’m Gonna Make A Change, For Once In My Life

It’s Gonna Feel Real Good,
Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . . .
As I, Turn Up The Collar On My,Favourite Winter Coat
This Wind Is Blowin’ My Mind, I See The Kids In The Street,
With Not Enough To Eat, Who Am I, To Be Blind?
Pretending Not To See, Their Needs
A Summer’s Disregard, A Broken Bottle Top
And A One Man’s Soul, They Follow Each Other On
The Wind Ya’ Know ‘Cause They Got Nowhere
To Go
That’s Why I Want You To Know
I’m Starting With The Man In
The Mirror
I’m Asking Him To Change His Ways
And No Message Could Have Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place
(If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place)
Take A Look At Yourself, And Then Make A Change
(Take A Look At Yourself, And Then Make A Change)
(Na Na Na, Na Na, Na Nah)
I’ve Been A Victim Of A Selfish Kind Of Love
It’s Time That I Realize That There Are Some With No
Home, Not A Nickel To Loan Could It Be Really Me,
Pretending That They’re Not Alone?
A Willow Deeply Scarred, Somebody’s Broken Heart
And A Washed-Out Dream (Washed-Out Dream)
They Follow The Pattern Of The Wind, Ya’ See
Cause They Got No Place To Be
That’s Why I’m Starting With Me
(Starting With Me!)
I’m Starting With The Man In The Mirror (Ooh!)
I’m Asking Him To Change His Ways (Ooh!)
And No Message Could Have Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place

That Man, That Man, That Man, That Man With That Man In The Mirror
(Man In The Mirror, Oh Yeah!)
That Man, That Man, That Man
I’m Asking Him To Change His Ways
(Better Change!)
You Know . . .That Man
No Message Could Have Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place
(If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place)
Take A Look At Yourself And Then Make A Change
(Take A Look At Yourself And Then Make A Change)
Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!
Na Na Na, Na Na Na, Na Na, Na Nah (Oh Yeah!)
Gonna Feel Real Good Now! Yeah Yeah! Yeah Yeah!

TRANSLATION

Homem No Espelho
É hora que eu compreenda Que existem alguns sem casa;
Eles seguem o exemplo do vento, você percebe,

Aquele homem, aquele homem, aquele homem, aquele homem…
Com o homem no espelho… (Homem no espelho, oh sim!)
Aquele homem, aquele homem, aquele homem, estou pedindo a ele para mudar seus modos… (Melhor mudar!)
Vamos! (Mude…)
Apenas levante-se,Você sabe.
Você tem de parar isso, você mesmo!
(Sim! Faça aquela mudança!) Eu tenho de fazer aquela mudança, hoje!
(Homem no espelho)
(Sim! Faça a mudança) Você sabe – Preciso entender aquele homem, aquele homem…
(Homem no espelho) Você precisa
Você precisa se mexer! Vamos! Vamos! Você tem de levantar-se! Levantar-se! Levantar-se!
(Sim!
(Homem no espelho) (Sim! Faça aquela mudança!) Vou fazer aquela mudança…
Vamos! Você sabe! Você sabe! Você sabe! Você sabe… (Mude)
Faça aquela mudança…

Half a million volunteers on duty

Beijing Olympic Games help promote volunteering spirit in China.

clip_image002

We, as spectators, cannot imagine what it is like to be on the backstage of this great event, The Olympic Games.

Well, even the committees need a little help, and as we are talking about China, where little is much, the event is going to count on 500,000 volunteers during the two weeks when the games happen up to Paralympics, in September.

clip_image004

They will be on hand to ensure everything runs smoothly in Beijing and other Olympic venue cities. That is the most important idea, but by this action, Beijing also wants to send a message about the power of volunteerism, not only to sport, but also to the well-being of whole society worldwide.

clip_image008A man was pulled over for driving too fast, even though he thought he was driving just fine.
Officer: You were speeding.
Man: No, I wasn’t.
Officer: Yes, you were. I’m giving you a ticket.
Man: But I wasn’t speeding.
Officer: Tell that to the judge! (The officer gives man the ticket.)
Man: Would I get another ticket if I called you a jerk?
Officer: Yes, you would.
Man: What if I just thought that you were?
Officer: I can’t give you a ticket for what you think.
Man: Fine, I think you’re a jerk!

Returning from her vacation, the young secretary was telling anyone who would listen about what a fun time she had.

She then asked for two weeks leave in which to get married.

“But you just had two weeks off,” said the boss.

“Why didn’t you get married then?”

“What? And ruin my vacation?” she whined.
